Spirit Day 18
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is
the word of God;
Ephesians
6:17
In the past, warriors and soldiers were fully loaded with
armor when going into battle, but there was primarily one traditional weapon
used to go on the offensive, the sword. Usually short and made for intense,
close, and quick response encounters, one had to be familiar with his sword or
lose his fight. Even more, the sword was double edged. So, if the person using
the sword was unskilled, he might cut himself. Finally, a warrior or soldier
never intentionally released his sword until the battle was over.
It is easy to see why the (s)Word of God is given to us as
our primary tool to defeat Satan’s attempts to lead us astray. When we use
scripture to resist Satan, just as Christ did in the fourth chapter of Matthew,
we too can escape Satan’s traps. One appropriately applied scripture is better
than any philosophy or motivational quote. It also reveals to others that they,
too, should learn from our sword fighting instructor.
We
can make sure that we are well trained by taking the time to learn and apply the
Spirit-inspired words of our bibles. When we put on the full armor of God, we
can do more than just prepare to protect ourselves. We can become skilled,
scripture-wielding believers, who are prepared to take on Satan. All we have to
do is take the time and train.
